Apr 18, 2012 - Yet another tech blog. Personal blog of Claudio Kuenzler. May 01, 2018 Pros & Cons To release a better GUI than the one made for Robocopy is not that difficult. So to summarize this transfer, both tools have strong pros and cons: Obviously RichCopy and RoboCopy are popular software when it comes to.

It's been a while since I have had to move a shit ton of files. Just checking if there is anything better out there. ( speed wise) We are moving off net app. I need to get several shares of the netapp and on to a Windows dfs.
I used robocopy last night for one of shares and it was painfully slow. 8 hrs for 400gb. Unfortunately that is the smallest share I have. Any tips on robocopy or a alternatives would be greatly appreciated. I can post the actual flags I am using when I get home if that would be helpful. Robocopy with the /mt switch for multithreaded copying should help.
Also I've never really done a Big Bang move of a large dataset with robocopy all at once. Best way is to to an initial copy and then a diff copy. You can run your initial copy to get the majority of data and then the diff at the time of cutover.
If you are copying to or from a Linux file system make sure you use the /fft switch Linux and ntfs timestamps are not handled the same and the diff won't work right. Other options if you don't want to use robocopy are richcopy, emccopy, securecopy. I usually stick with robocopy tho. That's 13.8MB/s, not massive speed but fast enough that it doesn't look like you have a 100Mbps bottleneck somewhere. Is the problem that you need to move the shares during quiet hours and that's too long? When I've had that I've used rsync to do live copies, throttled during daylight hours, and done that several times over. That way only the final sync has to be done with the users out of the way and you don't switch until that final sync is done.
I'm sure Robocopy will do incremental copies as well, not sure how it compares to rsync for speed. (PS WTF Google? I put '400GB/8 hours' in the search box and it put the MB/s figure in the drop down before I even searched it.).
In my years as a computer tech, I frequently have to copy or move large amounts of data between systems and other devices such as external hard drives. Usually, being lazy about it and simply copying or cutting files and directories and pasting them where they need to go.
Of course, anyone who has tried this when shifting large amounts of data, especially from one system to another, will find that it often takes huge amounts of time and quite often there are endless amounts of prompts to overwrite data, errors pertaining to destination file names being too long for Windows Explorer to handle or permission errors which leads to incomplete transfers. I decided to go in search of a better method for shifting files around and discovered a lot of discussion about Robocopy (short for robust copy), which was built into Windows operating systems and it looked exactly like what I was after. Digging a little deeper I found that Robocopy had been improved upon by Microsoft Engineer, Ken Tamaru who released RichCopy. There is not much point in me rewriting a description of just what this program can do as it is outlined well in the, but I am kicking myself that I did not find this years ago. So anyone who regularly has to copy large amounts of data, I strongly suggest you give RichCopy a go.
I have tested it on Windows 8 and Windows 10, I am 99% certain it will also work in Windows 7 but have not had a chance to test it as yet. You can find the download link in the TechNet article above.
Two things to note, I suggest running the utility as an Administrator and also when you first open it, go to the ‘View’ menu and select ‘Advanced’ to unlock the full power of this program. Author Posted on Categories, Tags,.
